Squats, Push-ups, Tricep Dips and Crunches.

Well, folks. My fitness routine has not been going so great. I've attempted quite a few workout videos which have trickled off into doing nothing. I however did get a new pair of Merrell running shoes from the Baluczynski family for my birthday. I've taken those out a handful of times for walk/runs, but the weather just hasn't been great.

I've got yet another fitness routine to attempt, but I'm determined to keep this one up. It all started when Maren told me about her 100-push-up program. It is a program that helps you work your way up to being able to do 100 push-ups. I took a look at the website and realized it was something I could do, too. They also have programs for 200 stomach crunches, 200 squats and 150 tricep dips. I decided to give it a go.

In order to pick which level program you can handle, you do an intial test of how many of each you can do in a row. At 141 pounds my results are:
– 12 push-ups (girl style on knees)
– 25 stomach crunches
– 25 tricep dips
– 100 squats

My fitness reflects the type of exercise I've done my entire life: running. My goal is to get some muscle on the arms and get rid of my paunch. The program is 6 weeks, I'll keep you updated.

Bed Head, Some Days

The great thing about being a freelancer and working from home is probably the whole "get up and get to work" lifestyle. No ones cares that I don't brush my hair in the morning. My cat doesn't seem to mind. There's also no one around to tell me that I've worn the same sweater everyday this month. Most days I attempt to get dressed and look presentable, but there are definitely those days when I stay in my comfy clothes.

Okay, I'm going to get dressed now.

Mixing it Up

One of my 2011 goals is to "get in shape". For years I've been a basic runner. I thought running was all I really needed to do to stay "in shape". Last year I had some minor foot problems that never got sorted out, so I've resorted to other forms of exercise. I met with my friend Tony, who happens to be a personal trainer, about eating goals and strength training. He really opened my eyes to the importance of building strength when trying to get in shape. So, I've been mixing it up by doing a variety of exercises: personalized strength training workout from Tony, pilates, 30 Day Shred video, and soon I will be biking and running outside. Which brings me to the point of this entry.

I am not good at cardio dance videos. I popped in a shape DVD that I bought a couple of years ago, it's called "Bikini Body" and has a variety of 10-minute dance sessions. I selected the Jazz Dance session and attempted to follow the trainer, which lasted for about 60 seconds until I just stared dumbfounded at the screen. I am not cut out to do a series of moves. She kept adding on another move until it was way too complicated. I decided to put that DVD in the garage sale pile.

Wow, it's been WAY too long since I last posted. I'm gonna post some photos just to get sort-of caught up...read this post bottom to top.

To start off August, we celebrated Kate's 28th Birthday at the Melting Pot. So fun!

One of my dear friends, Alisa, got married on the last day of July! Kate, Maren and I made a trip down to Cedar Rapids to see her get hitched.

Darin & Jonny rode in Ragbrai, so Maren, RiAnna and I took a quick road trip down to Clear Lake, IA to visit them mid-week.

At the end of July we had a Prom-themed bowling night at Mady's.
We also went to the St. Paul Farmer's market with Casey & Lacey & their two girls. Pippa had a little puke incident so Doug was entertaining Olive with the camera while she got cleaned up.
Doug and I got to babysit Ian for a day, that was a lot of fun! Even got to change a poopy diaper.

In July we celebrated Jen's 29th Birthday at Chino Latino in Minneapolis. Yum!

Maren and I also participated in the EG craft fair in Iowa. We sold our handmade jewelry!

In June, Emily Steffen photographed our jewelry so we could have some promotional photos.

In May, Maren started up "Jogger's Photography" group, inspired by Zooey Deschanel's character in Yes Man. Photo is from the first run/meeting.

For the past couple of weeks Doug and I have been busy looking at new places to rent. We aren't happy at our current place, and are just ready for something new and fresh. We started looking in the NE Mpls area, but soon found that we couldn't afford any of the houses, and they don't have much for apartments.

So, we started looking in St. Paul, and that is where we found a nice 2-bedroom apartment that is spacious and even has hardwood floors (which I really wanted!). We will be moving at the beginning of May since the place was available and we wanted to secure our spot as tenants.

We signed our 13-mo lease yesterday, and in celebration, went to eat lunch at Porky's in St. Paul. It is one of Doug's favorite burger places. Here are some photos from our date.

Well folks, I got to cross another thing off my new year's list. Rollerderby. Nikki and Tony came up to MN for the weekend and we went to the rollerderby on friday night. It was quite the experience! I would definitely go again.

My New Year's Goal was to manage & spend my time wisely, so exercise and eating healthy fit right into that goal. I want to be healthier and in shape this year. I've gained a few pounds in the last few years and would love to trim them off again.

The problem for me is consistency. I'm not very good at staying consistent in what I eat or when I exercise. I love pop. Oreo McFlurries. I don't want to get out of bed to exercise, I'd rather sleep another 30 minutes. So, to keep me on track....I joined a free online thingy.

A friend of mine recommended signing up for SparkPeople.com, so that is what I did this morning. It's a step in the direction of health. And skinny. I'm saying goodbye to being out of breath at the top of the stairs.

This website helps you set goals and track them. It also has meal suggestions and shopping lists, pretty neat. We'll see what happens.

I can already tell that 2010 is going to fabulous. I've been meaning to write this post for almost two months now. The trend is to write goals for the new year, to come up with a resolution to keep for the year. To simplify my goals, I am going to say that this year I want to manage & spend my time wisely.

A lot goes into that. I want my time to be worthwhile. Especially since I am trying to be self-supporting by being a freelance designer. (Of course it helps that my husband has a job, too.) I want to make the most of my time by investing in relationships & friendships, reading and learning more about my faith & God's role in my life, networking, researching, and building my business, as well as working out & becoming a healthy person. I know I am going to be happy if I spend my time wisely.

I want to try new things, go places I've never been, and experience some really neat things. One things on my list is to go to a rollerderby! I also want to check out the gymnastics gym that has adult open gym. I'm excited to get back on those mega trampolines!

Discipline

I got bored with updating my unemployment days. I've basically been doing a lot of networking, freelancing, and reconnecting with people. I love being able to plan my days according to how I'm feeling. For the most part I've been using my days productively, but have also been meeting with friends and aquaintences as well.

According to the Minnesota Workers Orientation that I attended on Monday, networking is how 80% of people find jobs. Only 10% find jobs through mega job sites like Monster.com, etc. So, I don't feel so bad that I'm intermitently meeting friends for coffee or dinner to chat. I'm getting ahead, and it has actually led me to a few freelance jobs, no matter how big or small the gig.

So, if you know of anyone who needs any sort of design done, give them my info, please.

On another note, I need to be more disciplined with other things than just finding a job and doing freelance. I would like to spend time in the word, as well as exercise regularly and eat healthier. Those things take more discipline and are easier for me to excuse from my regular routine.

Unemployment Days 11, 12, 13, 14

This week has been productive!

Accomplishments:
Networking with fellow design friends and other people as well
Freelancing for a couple of individuals
Ate an entire bag of cheetos single-handedly
Got first unemployment benefit
Helped out at Box of Love on mon.
Helped out with preschool at church on wed.
And tonight I am going to the midnight showing of New Moon!

BFF Weekend

Got to hang out with Becky, Kate, Jen and Maren all weekend! Spent friday evening at Jen's just chilling, talking, playing games.

Saturday morning got all dressed up for a photoshoot with Emily Steffen! We wore cute vintage dresses for part of it. Can't wait to get the photos back.

Went out to eat for a late lunch, headed back to Jen's to relax and watch The Proposal. Ordered pizza and played cards and relaxed a bit more. Stayed up late. Becky left early afternoon on sunday. The end.

Unemployment Day 10

Got up at 6:00 to get an early start to a busy day. Looked at new job listings.

Went grocery shopping.

Went to hair appointment with Hazel at Moxie salon.

Baked cake.

Packed for weekend.

Becky arrived to try on dresses for the photoshoot.

Finished making Trifle dessert.

Went to Jen's for a fun-filled weekend.

Unemployment Day 9

Got up at 6:30 and did some job search stuff.

Amber came over for brunch.

Worked on some details for BFF weekend, including games, prizes, outfits for the weekend. Went to a couple thriftstores to find prizes.

That evening I went over to Angies to make cards! Very fun.

Unemployment Day 8

Started the morning at 7 checking emails and looking ta jobs online. Had one response to my craigslisting about designing wedding invitations. Also am going to be designing at line of t-shirts, can't remember if I updated on that yet.

Went to the post office to ship a few things.

Stopped at a couple of thriftstores since it was Veteran's Day and they were having a 50% off sale. Found a new Supehero vintage puzzle for $1.69 and bought it in hopes of Doug actually getting into a puzzle! ha! I miss my puzzling buddies from STEM.

Went to Walmart for some necessities. Don't you just hate buying soap and toothpaste, etc.?

Got home and started preparing some fun things to do this weekend. Becky is coming up from Iowa this weekend! Becky, Kate, Maren and I are staying at Jens for the weekend. This is our annual BFF get-together and I'm super excited. Emily will be taking our photos on saturday, which means I finally get to do my vintage dress photoshoot! Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went through all of my storage bins, even in the storage closet down the hallway, went through all my clothing and even cupboards. I love getting plurging and i love shopping. I plan to head to Everyday People today to see if any of my "designer" clothing is worth any mooolah.

Started a sewing project around 8:30 and ran into a lot of problems with my old sewing machine. Those things make me go crazy! I got so frustrated that I called my mom not realizing it was already like 10 p.m! Sorry Mom! I eventually got it figured out and the stitches were looking good, so I sewed for a couple of hours. It felt good to finally sew again. The end.

Unemployment Day 7

Tuesday started around 7 am and similar to all of my unemployed days, by looking for jobs online. I worked on more Heads Twogether stuff in the morning. Did more unemployment paperwork, ick.

Met Doug in St. Paul to look at a house for rent but the guy never showed up. Came back home, baked some cookies and went to Dani's for dinner. She is an EXCELLENT cook! We had fun just sitting around chatting and looking at wedding photos. :)

Unemployment Day 6

Monday I got up around 7 and I spent all morning filling out unemployment stuff, signing up on job sites and looking for jobs. I even posted myself on craigslist - for invitation design. :)

I spent the afternoon doing Heads Twogether stuff and went over to Maren's to watch Heroes and eat pizza.

Sunday

I helped out with preschool at church, it's always a joy when Olive is there, she is such a hip little girl due to Lacey's fashion choices. It's adorable.

After church a dozen of us headed over to Woodbury to make shishkabobs (how do you spell that?) at Cynthia & Mike's place. It was a lot of fun to get together at a home instead of a restaurant. We should do pot lucks more often. We stayed until 3ish.

Took an afternoon nap. Made some guac and ate with chips, caught up on 30 Rock and the Office and went to bed.

Saturday

Saturday was a very fun day! Cynthia & Mike met Doug and I at Fat Nat's Diner (one of our fav places to eat) for brunch. Had some delicious almond blueberry pancakes.

Cynthia and I left the guys and went vintage dress shopping. Our goal was to find a cute 50's style dress for Cynthia. We got drinks at the Spyhouse before perusing the racks at Via's Vintage, BlackList Vintage, and Everyday People. Oh yes and we even stopped at a corner store that I don't remember the name of, but it had a ton of vintage clothing and accessories.

I took a nap when I got back from shopping, and then headed to Zimmerman with Maren to our friend Anna's baby shower. That was fun to see some of her family and celebrate the soon-t0-be-mother!

That's about it. Got home and went to bed. That is why it's 4:45 a.m. and I'm up already.

Unemployment Day 5

The fire alarm started sounded in the hallway right above our apartment door at 6:45 a.m. At first I wasn't sure what it was because it didn't sound the a bell, it was just a loud noise. I opened our door and realized it was the fire alarm and so Doug and I got out of bed, got dressed, rounded up the freaked out kitty, grabbed our bags (purse, and computer, and external hardrive) and went down. Our maintenance guy waved us back upstairs and said "False alarm" or something of the sort and we went back to bed until 7:30.

Had some leftover rice with milk, cinnamon and sugar heated up in a bowl for breakfast. A fav childhood breakfast. Looked at the job sites, not much listed for design jobs.

Called the flower shop to see if they had a chance to look at our website, left a message.

Photographed merch and started listing on etsy. Listed some earrings, rings, and necklaces. Blogged about the new merch on the Heads Twogether (HT) blog.

Got a call back from Laurel's Floral Shop & Boutique and set up a meeting to show them our HT products. They were mostly interested in our rings. Showered, got an invoice ready and went over to St.Paul to meet up with the ladies.

Drove around St.Paul looking for potential apartments, there are a lot of apartment on Randolph but none seem to have a parking lot.

Headed over to Kate's, she was still working (at home) so I got myself a snack and then Maren showed up. We chatted a bit and then read our books until Kate was done working. Then we went back to St.Paul and ate with Monica, Luke, Jackie and her friend. After eating and chatting for well over an hour we headed back to Kate's to watch Twilight. The end.

Unemployment Day 4

Arose at 7 a.m. to look for jobs and catch up on email/facebook.

Went to the dentist to get three fillings. It took two hours! Gah!

Came home and made some soup, since I'm not supposed to eat hard things with my new fillings.

Worked on Heads Twogether stuff, got some merch ready and took it to the Design Collective in Uptown Minneapolis. She is having a sale November 20-30 and Heads Twogether items will be 20% off. Go shop!

Was very tempted to get bubble tea at the Tea Garden next to the Design Collective, but thought better of it since I just had three cavaties filled. Bubble tea = pure sugar.

Went to a couple of thrifties to look for jewelry supplies. The Unique on County D is really great now that they remodeled it. They have a massive jewelry counter and I found some goods there. Savers was less impressive. I don't normally go there but have found some neat vintage jewelry there in the past. Didn't have any luck this time.

Finally went grocery shopping at Cub foods.

Started dinner and cleaned up the house a bit before Kate came over. Had a nice chicken, rice, veg meal with Kate and Doug. We even had some sparkling white grape juice! mmmm. It was my pop-substitute.

After dinner Kate and I visited Maren at Turnstyle, went to Marshalls to look for tights but only found Twilight books for Kate.

Watched a few episodes of some crazy show with Doug. The show was about this guy who goes around cities to try the best pig out restaurants in town and eats 7 lb. burgers, etc etc.

Unemployment Day 3

Wednesday turned out to be not as productive as the first two. I woke again at 7 a.m. and checked my e-mail and looked on job sites for new listings.

Worked on my office/craft area a bit more, got some things in order.

Met up with Steph, Stacie & Ian for lunch, hung around Stacies for a few hours just chatting, adoring the baby and watching some hilarious design shows.

Went to Target to get a baby gift for my friend Anna who is having her first baby in January!

Stopped by to visit my friend Amanda (we worked together at Target) to chat a bit before church.

This week is Missions Week at Oak Hills Church and we had the pleasure of having our Cambodian missionaries come speak lastnight. I had never heard their story, but it is an amazing one. I am glad I got a chance to hear it. The married couple grew up in Cambodia and experienced the killing fields but were lucky enough to survive. God had a calling on their lives and after becoming orphans as children and being raised in MN they went back to their home country to serve. If you want more details ask me.

Watched an episode of Glee before heading to bed.

Unemployment Day 2

Got up at 7 a.m. and made sugar cookies. Ate too many of them for breakfast.

Did more looking around for jobs.

Posted some neat necklaces on the etsy shop.

Spent like an hour putting the plastic over the large sliding glass doors to winterize them. Not fun.

Made fettucine alfredo from scratch (besides the noodles).

Went to the post office to mail a couple of packages.

Decided to completely rearrange workspace/office/craft area. Had to buy an extension telephone cord because my computer is too far away from the ONLY telephone outlet in the apartment. Go figure. Luckily the hardware store across the street sells them. It took me quite awhile to get everything situated where I wanted it because i moved everything around more than once. But now my office area is more practical.

Laid down because my back was hurting, fell asleep for about an hour. Doug came home so i made dinner, consisting of Aggkaka (egg dish), bacon, and a bottle of champagne from Stacie.

Watched 90's movie Can't Hardly Wait. Wow, that movie has like every actor/actress in it. Thought it was funny that Peter Facinelli was one of the lead characters because I only knew him as Carlisle in Twilight. haha.

Unemployment.

For those of you who are used to seeing me everyday at the office, you can read what I'm doing on my blog, now that I'm unemployed.

Monday, November 2nd
I got up around 7 a.m., which is when Doug gets up. I used to get up around 5:45 every morning so it was nice to sleep in.

Made a list of things to accomplish this week. I tackled the first item on my list: Apply for unemployment. Looked around online for jobs and found a couple of interesting ones to apply for. Also found a neat flower shop boutique advertising for handmade goods. I called the contact person and she is going to look at our website and get back to me.

I worked on a freelance project that I'm doing for a friend, which consists of designing a logo. I got stuck on that and am having a difficult time getting exactly what I want.

I paid the rent.

I paid the water bill.

I made a couple of appointments with friends.

Called Moxie to push my hair appointment back, in case I can't afford it.

Canceled our membership at the YMCA.

Did a little supply shopping for Heads Twogether.

Tidied up the apartment.

And lastly went to Maren's to watch Heroes. Which was a very not-so-great episode. Ugh.

Hopefully today will be more fulfilling. I'm going to make some sugar cookies and start on a new blog banner.

Catching Up.
I woke up to a snow-covered balcony. You can't blame the cat for not snoozing by the chilly window anymore.

Puz was at the window yesterday when it was nice and sunny.
Steph made a sign to cheer on her dad during the marathon last sunday. It was Bryan's 20th marathon, #1 and #20 run at the Twin Cities Marathon! Quite an accomplishment. I can't even say I've run one marathon.

Last saturday Maren and I participated in the Handmade Market, at a local coffeehouse. We made a decent number of sales per shopper. Met some fun , crafty gals, too.

Steph & Andy are married!

Doug's baby sis got married last saturday. It was an exciting and fun day. The couple was so cute during the ceremony and fun to watch dance and sing karaoke at the reception.

So happy for them! Plus they moved to Richfield and are a lot closer in distance, so we'll get to see a lot more of them in the future.

On another note, I ran into my college friend Becky H. at the grocery store today. What a pleasant surprise. Running into familiar faces at unexpected times always makes my day.

Wedding Invites

One dream of mine is to have a business with Maren, designing invitations. We're already doing a pretty good job of building a portfolio. We just need more clients. So, if you need an invitation made, whether it be wedding, baby shower, graduation or birthday, we'd love to help.

Here is the weddining invitation I designed for my sister-in-law. They wanted something affordable, simple, and current. This 4x6 postcard was the perfect solution, the RSVP being online and a website with information about the wedding.

Alexandria

Doug and I went to visit his grandparents, Bob & Bea, in Alexandria last weekend. It was a very relaxing, entertaining, and food-filled weekend. It was nice to spend some time with just them, without other family around. They took us out on the pontoon on saturday, which is always fun. I'm sorry I didn't take any photos to share.

On our way out of town, back home, we stopped at an antique store. They have really great prices there! I'm sharing a photo of the beauties I found! I'll be making some fun necklaces and rings very soon....

Maren and I decided to design a t-shirt to promote and support our dear friend, Brittany. She will be leaving this summer to be a missionary to Ukraine! The proceeds of this shirt will go towards her fundraising/support.

Cedar Rapids

A couple of weeks ago Maren, Kate, and I braved a winter storm to visit Alisa in Iowa. It was a lovely trip, one that was very overdue. She welcomed us into her little apartment and we had a girly weekend shopping, eating, and watching movies. Can't wait for you to visit us in MN, Alisa :)

Just designed some cute mini business cards for my hairstylist friend, Amanda/Hazel. Interesting story - after graduating from Aveda she got hired at Moxie. Moxie salon already has a hairdresser named Amanda, so she got to pick a new name. She now styles by the name Hazel.

Some overdue updates...

We moved to Crystal at the beginning of the month and have finally settled in completely.

Last Tuesday, Oct 28th was our 2nd wedding anniversary! Two years has really flown by, a lot has happened in that time! Thank you, Douglas, for being the best husband.

Tuesday also happened to be my last day working at STEM Int'l. It was a bittersweet day. The folks at STEM hosted a goodbye-brunch, which was very nice. I'm going to miss seeing my friends there everyday.

Wednesday I started my new job at Target Corp downtown mpls! I'll be contracting as a graphic designer there a few months. I was super nervous, but Doug's sister, Stacie, has been showing me the ropes since she works there too! Friday I rode the bus with her - my first bus ride! So far I'm really liking the job and looking forward my future at Target, whatever that may be.

A couple of other random, but important updates:

- Friends Katie & Joe had their adorable baby boy a couple of weeks ago! His name is Emmett.
- Tim & Lindsay got married!
- Jessie came to visit from ND, it was really fun to see her!

STILLWATER
Jen, Kate, Maren, and I took a short trip to Stillwater today! We try to plan a get-together weekend every year but it just hasn't happened this year. So, we took a day, instead of a weekend, to just hang out, take photos, and do something fun. Becky wasn't able to make it, she's a newly wed and spending time with her husband!

We made it to the apple orchard, but they didn't have a pumpkin patch! So we took photos, shopped around and bought apples, ate some apple brauts, which were delicious! Then headed over to main street where we walked around and stopped in at various shops, one favorite being the old fashioned candy store. :)

LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Douglas and I headed down to Iowa on saturday morning. Aaron, Adam, and Amy went with us to the Dayton Rodeo on saturday night, where we met up with a large group of friends! The Dayton rodeo is always entertaining.

On Sunday we went to church and celebrated Doug's birthday after lunch.

KATE'S 26th BIRTHDAY

I had an entertaining weekend, we celebrated Kate's birthday all 3 days!

Friday, after work, Maren and I drove to Roseville and went to eat with Kate at Chilli's. She opened gifts and we watched Penelope at her house.

Saturday was jam-packed with things to do, first thing in the morning Doug and I went apartment shopping , then headed to a family picnic, then parted ways (Doug going to the Science Museum with Grant & Derek) and I caught a ride with Jennifer to Kate's, where Monica, Maren, and Kate were. We went to the Twins baseball game that night!

The Twins lost 1 to 5 to Cleveland. Too bad. But we still had a great time at the game, we were seated at the very top of the dome, and I had to wait over an hour to get the cotton candy man to bring me some cotton candy!

After the game Jen had to leave for work, but the rest of us met up with Manda & Jonny for 1/2 price appetizers at Applebee's.

On Sunday a bunch of us from church went out to eat at the restaurant of Kate's choice: Green Mill, where we had pizza. Jen, Kate and I played some cards at my place afterwards, and got some ice cream treats at DQ, then ended the afternoon with a short walk / photo shoot.

SOMETHING I NEEDED TO BE REMINDED OF

When Formula Christianity Fails
by Paul Stewart

"The other day I wrote about the influence of pragmatism on the American church. We want our faith to “work” well for us, to make our lives shiny and happy and perfect, which seems to be a good formula until you come to a book like 1 Peter.

“God is pleased with you when you do what you know is right and patiently endure unfair treatment… if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you” – 1 Peter 2:19,20

This letter was written by Peter to the followers of Christ who had been scattered, due to persecution, all around Asia Minor. This community is trying to live out, the best way they know how, their understanding of the cross in the light of the Sermon on the Mount: "You have heard it said, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say...do not retaliate, love your enemies."

Jesus does not appeal to pragmatism in the Sermon. He didn’t say, “it makes good sense to make peace with someone who has wronged you” or “carry your enemy’s pack because such an act will help to uncover the basic humanity of that person.” Rather, the disciples are to turn the other cheek, go the second mile, avoid promiscuity, and remain faithful to their marriage vows because God is like this.

Notice, Peter doesn’t give advice on how to reduce stress, or make your problems go away, or give a five-point plan on managing your life. No he tells us to be submissive… and to patiently endure suffering. Why? Because “Jesus is Lord!” and Jesus is like this.

Peter says that we are to respect all human authority … “for the Lord’s sake” (2:13). We should respect the king... not in hope’s of getting something in return but because of our “fear and respect for God” (2:17). We should accept authority from slavemasters, not only if they are kind, but even if they are cruel, “for God is pleased when we patiently endure unfair treatment” (2:19)

As disciples we do these things because this is what the Kingdom of God looks like.

But these words fly in the face of everything we value as Americans -- Free speech; the right to pursue happiness; the right to hot French fries; the right to yell at a customer service agent who is rude; the right to submit a grievance to HR when our manager holds us accountable for actually doing our job.

If we truly believed and lived this message we would be radically different from our world because the message of the Kingdom turns our world upside-down. It shows the world to be foreign, an odd place -- where what makes sense to everybody else is revealed to be opposed to what God is doing among us.

As citizens of heaven we are foreigners here on earth. We take our identity and our mission from another place. Peter is calling Christians to give up striving for power and authority over human beings and instead pursue the good of others.

Peter is not condoning or condemning slavery, he is telling us how to live our Christian life, in a Godly manner; in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, especially when we are in difficult circumstances, and as followers of Christ that will certainly include suffering.

So for our American minds, pre-programmed to find truth in what “works” this is pretty radical thinking. We’re not even sure that to “patiently endure unfair treatment” is a noble thing to do. We’ve got to fight for our right to party.

Even if Peter could convince us, how would we pull this off?

Where can I go to find the strength to smile when someone cuts me off in traffic? How can I be gracious when my manager gives me twice the workload of my co-workers and pays me half as much? How can I love my neighbor when he neglects his yard and decreases my property value?

Peter actually shows us three important ways in this short letter: Christ’s example, the Church, and our hope for salvation."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRITTY

Last night I finally got to celebrate Brittany's birthday with her, even though it was weeks ago! We met up in Roseville and ate out at the Good Earth! That place is delicious and has a nice atmosphere. We gabbed and caught up on recent life happenings, and then went to the little trailish/parkish area for some photo fun.

We also sat down and talked some business. Britty has been accepted to go to Ukraine next fall, 2009. I'll be designing her bookmark, letter, and anything else she needs. I'm looking forward to it!

We met up with Maren at Turnstyle around 8:30 and looked around the store, then went to get some dessert at Baker's Square. (I had the cheesecake!)

Speaking of deep and encouraging relationships, lastnight Maren and I got together with our friend from college, RiAnna. I honestly hadn't seen her since May of 2007, and that was even brief. It felt so good just to see each other and catch up. It's neat that we can just pick off where we left a year ago. We also took some fun photos!

HAND WRITTEN LETTERS

It's been a bit too long since I last blogged, so here it goes. I've been thinking a lot lately about friends and my relationships with them. I'm honestly blessed to have such a wonderful group of amazing friends. I wish I had more time to spend with each one, but there really isn't enough time to do that, between working, eating, sleeping, etc.

This year I've been seeing my relatives more than in the past, which is really nice and something I've been hoping for awhile. I've also met some really great new friends this year.

I guess I would like to be more intentional in how I spend my time, I'd like to see and talk to friends more often. Facebook just doesn't cut it. I'm going to start writing hand written letters again, too. Seriously, I've had some of the best, deepest, most encouraging relationships through letters & notes. (I think I have about 300 from Katie!)

So, here's to Hand Written Letters & Friendships!

800 MILES, 4 STATES, 1 WEDDING, 1 ARTSFEST in 4 DAYS

That's right. We drove about 800 miles, were in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska all in a 4 day period. Let me give you the play by play.

Friday

After work we left the cities and hit some not so great weather on the drive to Brookings that evening. The skies were for the most part clear the whole way, until about mid-point we ran into some freaky looking clouds that were very low to the ground, we drove under them as they made a giant arch in the sky. Then it downpoured, but only for about ten minutes!

Saturday

We slept over at the Watkins, and got up early on saturday to go to the Brookings Art Festival. It was alot of fun, there were many vendors, craft, art, food, games, etc.

Another fun thing we did, was jump on Tyler's trampoline! We definately got our workouts in for the weekend!

Sunday

After lunch on sunday we drove from Brookings to Omaha, Nebraska for Megan & Luke Pettipoole's wedding. It was a gorgeous wedding!

Not only did we get to see them get married, but also visit with friends from far away! It was a blast to see Katie, Erin & Wayde, Stevie, and Amy & Tyler.

The evening ended with dancing and the Envy Corps playing. We crashed at Megan's and drove home monday morning.

Independence Day, 2008

July 4th was relaxing, maybe too relaxing. Doug and I were bored and antsy for the day to start. Kate came over around 4pm and we made hamburgers and had a nice dinner. We hung around, watched a movie until 7ish. We took off, headed for Excelsior with some friends, Ryan, Molly, and Phil.
We found a nice spot to watch the fireworks around 8, and just hung around until they started. We even got some delicious ice cream at Licks Unlimited! Yum!

The fireworks were pretty neat, I'm glad we went!

EARLY MORNINGS

So, I'm turning into my mom. As the months progress I keep getting up earlier and earlier, and the thing is, it keeps getting easier. Even on saturdays. Adam called me at 5:40 this morning (by accident) , but I heard my phone because I was sort of awake already. Of course I didn't actually get up until 6:15, but still.

I LOVE ROOTBEER, ACTUALLY, POP IN GENERAL

There really is no purpose to my post, other than proving that I can take an artistic photo. My goal for this year is to take more interesting photos. Even set up some photo shoots with friends who actually don't mind being photographed. I've been wanting to do a photoshoot with my BFFs wearing 50's/60's dresses, all dolled up. We'll see if that happens this summer or not.

VISITING EAGLE GROVE

Saturday morning Maren, Aaron, Amy, Laura and I ran the Greg Harris Memorial 5K. It was the perfect weather for a race. I have been training for a few weeks and was pleased with my time of 33 minutes. That gives me an 11 minute mile average, which was better than I had anticipated.

Wayde & Erin came to visit, we ate lunch at the deli, and then showed Erin around town. We even stopped at the local park to take some photos.

After church we headed over to Jonny's in St.Paul, where we had ourselves a nice little picnic cookout event! We had burgers, hotdogs, brauts, chips, potato salad, beans, and desert! After lunch the ladies chit-chatted while the guys played Frisbee. Altogether a wonderful time with dear friends.

Two More Weeks to Train

Ok, so I know the above image is sort of gross, considering my belly button sweat a heart shaped area on my shirt. But I do love running, it makes me feel like I've achieved something.

I'm feeling pretty positive about running the Greg Harris 5K in 2 weeks time. I'm currently running a little over 2.5 miles in about 33 minutes. That's not great considering that gives me about 12 minute miles and I ran 7.5 minute miles in High School.

I'm going to up my route to 3 miles this week, so at least I'll know I can run that far for the actual race.

Friday Night - Indiana Jones movie with friends at the Stano's

Saturday Morning - Douglas took me shopping on Grand Ave in St.Paul. More specifically, I got to pick out a fabulous vintage dress! Then he took me to Cosetta's - my fav restaurant, where we had pasta & pizza.

Saturday Afternoon - Doug & I went over to Maren & Darins; Adam, Amy, and Aaron had just drove up from Iowa. We hung out and made Mom's Homemade Pizza! (Maren kept forgetting stuff, so I think I made 2 trips to Target in 45 minutes. She even forgot to get the pizza pans!)

Saturday Evening - Jen came over in time to help make the pizzas, Maren also made a delicious cake that I got to decorate. We watched Eagle Vs Shark - starring Jemaine Clement, played some Wii games, and Shanghai.

Sunday Morning - slept in, went to 10:45 church service, ate at Granite City with 12 friends.

Sunday Afternoon - Went to Minneapolis to see Eisley at the Fine Line Cafe! Since we were at a 4:00 o'clock show (all ages) and are 21+ we got to go "upstairs" where there were empty tables and good view! We watched the opening bands upstairs, but went to the floor for Eisley.

Sunday Night - After the show we headed off to Applebees for some 1/2 price appetizers.

"Oh, well Reese Roper is my son."

This past weekend was spent at STMLC (Short-Term Mission Leaders Conference). STEM Int'l, the non-profit I work for, puts together and hosts this conference every year. We fly in really great speakers for our sessions and workshops. This year, one of my tasks was to pick up one of the workshop leaders from the airport. I am generally nervous about these types of things, because I'm not that great at talking to people I don't know. More specifically, I have a difficult time thinking of questions to ask to get the conversation flowing.

I knew a couple things about this woman, Ruth. One, that she was flying in from Denver. So once her bags were safely in my trunk, we zipped out of the airport and got to chatting. I asked her if she had any family in Denver, and she said yes. She asked me if I had heard of the band Five Iron Frenzy. I immediately replied "Yes! I went to the final show in Denver back in 2003!". Ruth replied "Oh, well Reese Roper is my son."

I didn't expect to hear that!

JAMES IS OUT

Those of you who watch reality TV, specifically Big Brother 9, may also be mourning the loss of James, who was voted out tonight. I was seriously bummed about it. He was the most truthful person to play the game. Also, the biggest threat. After winning the POV the last 3 weeks, he was finally defeated and voted out.
